A general practitioner is a medical professional who diagnoses and treats multiple diseases and conditions in both men and women. A general practitioner is often the family doctor and he looks after the overall health and fitness of his patients. Most people visit their general practitioners once or twice a year for checkups. General practitioners can be divided into two main categories. The first category is Doctor of Medicine, more commonly known as an M.D, and the second category is Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, also known as a D.O. The distinguishing factor between these two is that the latter is a specialist of musculoskeletal system of the body; however, both are responsible for examination of the patients and providing prescriptions. If you wish to become a general practitioner, the first thing you have to do is complete the academic requirements of this field of study. After finishing your high school and obtaining the relevant GEDs, you will have to earn a bachelor’s degree. Although it may not be strictly necessary, it is better to have a bachelor’s degree in a subject to the field of medicine. After you are done with the degree, you will have to take admission in a medical school. Medical schools are often very competitive and you will have to have a very good academic background to get into a good school. It is important to realize that it is not an easy career path and you will to put in a lot of hard work and effort to be a general practitioner. Once you are done with medical school, you will also need some practical experience before you can work independently as a general practitioner. This means that you will need to complete at least a three years residency with a good hospital or clinic. A residency is sort of an apprentice program for doctors where they can learn how to put their knowledge to practical use. In this way, after three years, they have enough experience to be able to diagnose and treat patients on their own. After your residency, you will be required to take an exam for being a general practitioner. If you pass this exam, that will be the final step and you will successfully become a general practitioner. After this, you can decide whether you are going to work independently or with a hospital as a general practitioner.
